-
- In most setups, you need to enter the information manually into the
- QVTHOST.RC file. The syntax is:
-
- <address> <name> [alias] [alias] [. . .]
-
- for example:
-
- 192.35.222.222 melvyl.ucop.edu melvyl
-
- WinQVT/Net does not use a QVTHOST.RC file in environments using a
- HOSTS file (these include PC-NFS and Windows Sockets). The HOSTS
- file should be modified instead.
-
- You should already have the appropriate file, as it is needed to locate
- nameservers. It can be modified with a text editor, such as Windows'
- Notepad.

- Subject: Trumpet News: why did no-one tell me about NEWS.INI
-
-
- I have been running myself ragged for several weeks trying to get my Trumpet
- News Reader to work. Everything seemed to go fine with QVT/Net (apart from
- regular crashes) but trumpet failed to do anything. I tried to monitor all the
- TCP and IP calls but Nothing/Nada/Nichts was going in the direction of the
- server (I am connected through a 2400 modem over a public dial-in to a SLIP
- server).
-
- I have now solved it! ... and I could kick myself, but maybe there is a lesson
- for someone else in this. The problem was the fact that the NEWS.INI file that
- I got with the software is empty. Once I had put the names of a couple of
- groups in the file (I used Windows Write but that isn't really relevant)
- everything worked fine ... that is, if this posting has made it then it works
- fine.
-
- What a silly bunt!

- Subject: Winsock hosts table dependence
-
- Hi All
-
- Ive tried several Winsock apps recently, and am annoyed by the number of
- apps that need a local host machine entry in the Winsock hosts file.
- My PC gets its IP via BOOTP. Ive been able to make QVT happy by making the
- PCs name BOOT. Other applications, such as (I can remember his name) LPD
- server, and WSLPRSP require a hosts entry. Does anyone know a fix for
- this ?
-
- Regards

- Eric, you asked how Mike was getting 3.5 K a sec from his PPP/Slip
- connection. Well, I cannot answer that, but I can tell you why you are not
- getting Great speeds:
-
- You are using Cac or OTC's terminal server. They are terribly slow. I have
- gotten %30 percent better speeds from other ppp servers than PSU's.
-
- Also, you menton you tried PPP and SLIP with Trumpet Winsock. I was under the
- understanding that Trumpet only supported SLIP. Is there something I do not
- know about?
